8 Steps to Flawless Foundation Application [Tips & Techniques]

Hello Beauties
First of all Sorry for being MIA. But now, since i am back i would start with sharing how to apply foundation flawlessly for a perfect look.

Foundation application is the key to flawless looking makeup. Bad application and too much of a product can ruin the look. I've been getting A LOT of questions regarding foundation application from my friends and family. Mostly the questions are regarding how to get flawless application, how to hide dark circles and how to avoid foundation from looking cakey. After going through those questions and after testing different techniques and tools, I thought of writing a post about how I do my foundation to achieve the flawless foundation.

Steps to flawless foundation routine:

1. Be it face, lips or nails; everything thing needs to be prepped and primed prior to the application to get a smooth long lasting finish. Always cleanse, exfoliate and tone your skin. This helps to get rid of dirt and any dead skin on the face. Dead skin and dirt are one of the reasons for bad application.

2. Always moisturize your face. Whether you have dry, normal or oily skin moisturizing is necessary. There is a moisturizer for every skin type. For oily skin type, the key is to start from outwards instead of inwards. Take a pea size amount of moisturizer, rub on the fingers and start rubbing from the outer face taking the remaining product inwards.

3. Apply primer! It is an optional step. It is for those who face foundation fading, changing color or looking gray. Primer not only helps foundation to stay put for long but also prevents the foundation to react with the skin and change the color.

4. Do you have VERY dark circles? The blueish ones that are hard to hide with a concealer? Orange corrector is THE product you need to have in your makeup stash. It is the step after the primer if you are using the corrector. If not, skip this step to 5. Apply on the areas which needs coverage with a ring finger or a wedge sponge. Remember to dab it and not rub it. Dabbing makes the product to absorb in.

5. Foundation ALWAYS comes before concealer. If you are using a foundation, concealer is the step after foundation. Whatever foundation you are using, the key is blending. I prefer fingers the most, but some products do need tools. I've used Sigma F80, normal local sponges and a tear drop beauty sponge (dupe for beauty blender). I now know the difference between the coverage every tool gives. Tear Drop Beauty sponge gives the most natural coverage, blends in easily, no cracks, no cakey finish and flawless application.

6. After foundation comes the concealer. This is the query everyone has and most of the girls doesn't know. Especially the girls at makeup counters in the supermarkets. We use concealer after foundation because that's when you know how much coverage you actually need; we don't need an extra product to make the under eye area cakey or cracky. Also you rub off the concealer while applying the foundation. Again, always dab. Apply with a brush or the ring finger and dab with a sponge - it gives a natural flawless finish.

7. Dust the translucent/loose powder or compact powder lightly, with a large fluffy brush. If you are opting for full coverage, lightly dust the powder on the t-zone bringing the product outwards. For dry to normal skin types, use as lightly as possible to avoid dryness.

8. Spray a setting mist or makeup fixing spray, this helps foundation to set. One thing I've learned and read too after experiencing is: going in the heat to set the foundation. Heat/warmth ALWAYS help foundation to set (personal experience). It doesn't mean stay in the heat, you can do that in a warm room or in the hot shower.

These are the steps I follow to get a flawless natural looking foundation.

Remember: The key is blending; DO NOT rub the concealer or foundation. Always dab them, dabbing helps in foundation to absorb into the skin and covering the uneven skin tone. Or if you are using the brush, always apply in circular motion; be it liquid or powder foundation. Rubbing gives streaky application, in that way you tend to use a lot of product ending up with a cakey finish.

The tools I used: Triangular wedge sponge for concealer and Abbamart Tear Drop Beauty sponge (dupe of beauty blender) for the foundation. I sometimes use a Tear Drop Beatuy sponge for foundation and concealer both.I got mine from Local Supermarket.

Disclaimer: I've shared my personal experience after trying different tools and techniques for flawless foundation. This is the one I follow now and I am a happy person. It also depends on the products you use.

I will do another post with all the products I use and the picture of myself with the steps. If you have any questions, please leave in the comments below so that I can cover them in the next post.

xoxo
Munira.
